How do I become an Approved Driving Instructors?

There is a three stage qualification process to becoming an ADI:

Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception

Part 2 – Driving Ability Test

Part 3 – Test of Instructional Ability

N.B. All 3 parts must be completed within two years of passing Part 1.

Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception

You will be asked to complete 100 theory questions, which are in 4 bands, you must score 20 in each band to pass the theory test and score a minimum of 85% overall. At this stage you will also need to take and pass the Hazard Perception Test, you will be shown 14 clips each with a clear developing hazard and one clip with two, totalling 15 hazards to be spotted. You can score up to 5 points per hazard but must achieve a score of 57 out of a possible 75.

Part 2 – Driving Ability Test

This is thorough assessment of your driving, lasting about an hour. You will drive on a variety of roads including Motorways and be asked to carry out all of the manoeuvres that a learner might be asked to perform on test, plus a reverse to the right. Your eyesight will also be checked by the examiner before the drive, you must be able to read a number plate at 90 feet (27.5m)

Part 3 – Test of Instructional Ability

This test is also about 1 hour in duration; it is broken into two 30 minute phases. It is designed to examine how you would instruct students at different levels.

Phase 1: this is a new or partly trained driver, where you will be teaching something new to the student.

Phase 2: this would be a trained student at about test standard or a qualified driver. You would need to spot faults in the driving and fix.
